ACTION MEMORANDUM FOR ALL AAS/SW REGION COMMANDERS AND  PRESIDENTS: FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION TO ALL MEMBERS

SUBJECT: ARNOLD AIR SOCIETY AND SILVER WINGS FLYING SCHOLARSHIPS 2019-2020

1. The AAS/SW Executive Management Center is accepting nominations for cash award flight scholarships to be available to all students in Arnold Air Society and Silver Wings beginning in late December 2019.

The Executive Directors express deep appreciation to the following donors who made this year’s flight scholarship program possible:

  • Southwest Airlines (designated grant)
  • The Airpower Foundation (designated grant)
  • The Lockheed Martin Corporation
  • The Boeing Corporation

In addition, we recognize the constant and unwavering support of the following sponsors, upon whom, the success of virtually every program we execute relies

  • USAA
  • The Airlift Tanker Association
  • The Air Force Association

2. Thirty scholarships are available with the following values:

  • Ten $1,500.00 scholarships available for all students
    • One named IHO General (Ret) Craig R. McKinley
  • Ten $1,500.00 scholarships available for women
    • One named IHO Mr. Herb Kelleher, founder, Southwest Airlines
  • Ten $1,500.00 scholarships available for students identifying as African American
    • One named IHO Mr. Herb Kelleher, founder, Southwest Airlines

EVERY active member (dues paid) of Silver Wings and Arnold Air Society, including those who have recently become Associates or Initiates, is eligible.  Students with or without flight experience are eligible.

3. SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates will be screened by the Executive Directors (EDs) and competitively selected by the EDs and two retired General Officers who were military pilots.

The following will be used to evaluate individuals:

  • MANDATORY: Availability to begin using the cash award for flight training between December 2019 and June 2020
  • MANDATORY: Member in good standing in Arnold Air Society and Silver Wings with dues fully paid at the time of application
  • MANDATORY: Completion of an essay not to exceed 300 words explaining the reason flight training is desired.
  • MANDATORY: Students selected for Southwest Airlines, Airpower Foundation, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, or McKinley sponsored scholarships must be willing to draft a brief e-mail of thanks for the EMC to provide to the sponsor
  • MANDATORY: Students selected for Southwest Airlines, Airpower Foundation, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, or McKinley sponsored scholarships must be willing to provide a photograph, preferably at flight training or in/around aircraft, for the EMC to provide to the sponsor (required by the sponsor)
  • MANDATORY: Students selected for a Southwest Airlines sponsored scholarship must be willing to participate in an on-camera interview or provide other media support if requested
  • MANDATORY: Unofficial transcripts that reflect a 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) GPA (or equivalent) or higher in any field of study

Candidates will self-nominate by sending the following information to mgmt.center@arnold-air.org NOT LATER THAN midnight Friday, 1 November 2019, Pacific Time.  Late submissions will not be accepted under any circumstances. NOTE: EACH APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED IN THE FORM OF AN E-MAIL WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THE ORDER BELOW. ONLY ONE ATTACHMENT IS PERMITTED: AN UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT.

  • APPLICANT NAME, GENDER, MAILING ADDRESS FOR HOME OF RECORD (NOT COLLEGE ADDRESS), PHONE NUMBER AND EMAIL ADDRESS
  • A STATEMENT THAT INDICATES IF YOU ARE APPLYING FOR A DONOR DESIGNATED AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP (IF SO, YOU REMAIN ELIGIBLE FOR OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS AS WELL) 
  • NAME OF COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY, FIELD(S) OF STUDY AND CUMULATIVE GPA
  • NAME OF CHAPTER OR SQUADRON AND AAS/SW LEADERSHIP OR STAFF POSITION HELD (IF ANY)
  • NAME, RANK, PHONE NUMBER AND EMAIL ADDRESS OF AFFILIATED DETACHMENT COMMANDER
  • NAME, TITLE, PHONE NUMBER AND EMAIL ADDRESS OF ONE REFERENCE WHO MAY VOUCH FOR ACADEMIC RECORD AND PERSONAL RELIABILITY
  • AIRPORT NAME AND FIXED BASE OPERATION (FLIGHT TRAINING CENTER) NAME, PHONE NUMBER AND CHIEF PILOT OR OTHER CONTACT E-MAIL ADDRESS WHERE THE APPLICANT WOULD LIKE TRAINING.  NOTE: THE PREFERRED METHOD OF PAYMENT IS WITH A CREDIT CARD…PLEASE ENSURE THE TRAINING CENTER ACCEPTS CREDIT CARDS FOR PAYMENT
  • A 300 WORD OR LESS SUMMARY DESCRIBING WHY YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE SELECTED FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY
  • A COPY OF AN UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT ATTACHED TO THE NOMINATING E-MAIL. NOTE: THIS IS THE ONLY ATTACHMENT PERMITTED AND IT MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE E-MAIL APPLICATION.

4. PROGRAM EXECUTION

SW/AAS students selected will be informed by their Detachment Commander in December. The EDs will coordinate directly with the desired fixed base operation (FBO) flight training center. The payment for training will be made directly to the flight center by the EMC on behalf of the student (students may be required to establish an account before it can be funded). Once payment is made, the student will simply contact the FBO to make arrangements for flight training consistent with their experience.
